  2. Hi Rashana,

I am an archaeologist who works on alternative ways of representing the prehistoric past, and I am looking for some advice (and a possible collaborator) on Labanotation as a system of representing human movement.

I excavate Neolithic sites in Eastern Europe and, though I have done my time writing traditional site reports and analytical journal articles, my recent work has moved to alternative media for engaging the past.

As part of my on-going research on alternative ways to represent the past, I am looking for a collaborator who would be interested in co-authoring a paper using Labanotation to represent movement that I recently recorded in Romania.

Two summers ago, made a short film as part of a large European Union grant that I held to look into the local interaction of Romanian villagers with their distant pasts. I showed the film at the meetings of the Society for American Archaeology in Sacramento last spring, where is was very well received.

As a result of that screening, I have been asked to “write” a chapter for an upcoming (peer-reviewed) book to be published by the University of Denver Press entitled “Alternative Narratives”. The editors of the book have agreed that I can present my chapter as graphic representation of the movements in the film that I made.

I came across Labanotation when I was working on a book project some time ago, and though I have been trying to teach myself how to use the system, I realize that the book chapter would be far better if I was able to find a co-author to work with.

Do you know anyone who would be interested, able, and willing to collaborate on this project?

Also, there is a larger project somewhere in the future about using Labanotation as a way of bringing to life the people of the prehistoric past, specifically from our excavation of a 8000-year old Romanian site.

Any suggestions or advice will be gratefully received.

    Thanks,

    Doug
